Privacy policy
Maziwa is built to collect as little as possible. This page explains, in plain words, what stays on your phone and what can leave it.
Last updated 30 September 2026 · Draft: to be reviewed by a Kenyan lawyer before launch.
The short version
- There is no account. We never ask for your name, phone number, email, ID number or location.
- Your farm records stay on your phone. We never receive them.
- When you set up a real farm and choose your county, community sharing starts switched on, and you can switch it off on the same screen or any time in Settings. When it is on, the app sends one small anonymous message a month. If you say you are only trying the app, nothing is shared.
- This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics or tracking.
What stays on your phone
Everything you record in Maziwa: your cows and their names, family and photos, milk for each milking, heats, services and calvings, treatments and health notes, costs, cash sales, animals bought and sold, advances, co-op prices and payments, your vet's name and number, and your settings.
These records are kept in the app's private storage. Cow photos are saved inside the app, not in your phone's gallery. Records are not copied to cloud backup. Your backup is the Excel export and the encrypted "Move to a new phone" file, which you control.
Reminders and alerts are worked out and scheduled on the phone itself. No server sends them, and nothing is sent when they appear.
Farm hands: an owner can invite a farm hand, and they exchange invites, daily reports and farm photos through WhatsApp, from one phone to the other. These messages never pass through Maziwa's servers, and Maziwa keeps no copy of the photos. WhatsApp's own privacy policy applies to the messages.
What the optional community share sends
While "Share with the community board" is on and your county is chosen, once a month the app sends a message about the previous month. It contains only:
- the month, for example 2026-09;
- your county, for example Nyandarua;
- for each breed you milk: the number of cows (up to 20) and the average litres per cow per day, rounded to the nearest half litre;
- the app version.
What it never sends
- No names of people or cows, no phone number, no device or advertising ID, no location, and no dates or amounts of individual records.
- A farm hand's phone never shares, so the same cows are not counted twice.
Problem reports
"Report a problem" opens WhatsApp with a message to the Maziwa team. It holds what you type and, if you leave the switch on, the app version, phone model and recent app errors. It never holds your farm records. You see the whole message and decide whether to send it. Your WhatsApp number becomes visible to us when you send it, as with any WhatsApp message, and we use it only to reply.
The app shows you the exact message before you turn sharing on.
What we do with shared numbers
We do not store the IP address or device details of the phone that sends a share. Our servers remove the IP address before the message is processed or logged.
Each night we add the shares up into county and breed averages. The individual shares are deleted after 60 days; only the totals are kept.
A county, or a breed in a county, appears on the community board only when at least 10 farms have shared for that month, so no single farm can be picked out.
Turning sharing off
Open Maziwa, go to Settings and switch off "Share with the community board". Nothing more is sent. Shares already sent cannot be linked to you, so they cannot be picked out and removed; they are deleted within 60 days in any case.
Deleting your records
In Settings you can have old records deleted automatically after 3, 6 or 12 months, or clear everything at once. Uninstalling the app also deletes all records on the phone.
This website
This website does not use cookies, analytics or advertising. Fonts are served from our own server. Like any website, our server briefly handles your IP address to send you the page, but it is removed before requests are logged.
Your rights
Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019 gives you rights over personal data. Because Maziwa does not collect personal data about you, there is normally nothing we hold that identifies you. If you have a question or concern, contact us and we will answer.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app sends, we will update this page and ask you again in the app before anything new is sent.
Contact
Contact email will be published before launch.
